The beauty of the form of the violin inspired “Opus I”. The artist created the piece using actual dimensions of a 1692 Stradivarius and incorporated a Stradivarius bas relief pattern of diamonds and circles as part of the ornamentation. She elected to render the body of the violin with negative space. On a real violin the “F” holes are the negative space and Elaine has reversed this making them suspended positive forms breaking the negative space of the violin body. The oval form of the Vermont granite base evokes the shape of a musical note.
